ARTIST STATEMENT
Rather than focusing on the “finished product,”
my works reflects the evolution of an abstract work - the process of getting
there. In my recent paintings, the palette knife and oil stick has become
more of a drawing tool using bold colors, earthly textures and calligraphic
lines. I want the “drawings” to be fast and relaxed which
is where the quick strokes appear fluid. Layer upon layer of these sketches,
fields of color, followed by erasing and reworking, creates a painting
which reveals its history gingerly.
Each work is a step in the direction to an unknown destination. Observation
of nature is the starting point of the paintings, but then I must decipher
the mysteries of nature and of painting. I start to take apart the scene
before my eyes and, in the process rearranging it, I embark on a journey
without a map. For me, that is the beauty of abstract work - a constant
exploration of ones self. This is reiterated in everyday life as we can
discover new things about oneself and the world around us continuously.
Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited,
whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving
birth to evolution.
